Discussion: Should robots be used in our lives to control things?

I think many people wonder about the future and what it holds for us as humans and our relationship with artificial intelligence. This weeks blog post will discuss robots and their value when it comes to controlling and making decisions about things. Should robots be used to control things in our lives?

Yes?
Robots can be used in all sorts of ways to help us. For example; war, rescue and medical are to name but a few. In war zones, robots can aid in survival of troops by protecting them, assisting them with bomb disposal and a number of other things. If they were used in bomb is disposal think about how many lives and limbs will be saved if a bomb does explode. We already use intelligent computing systems in hospitals to monitor patients and detect illness or injury, why not use robots as well? Also in rescue operations robots would be of great help. With heat-seeking and infra-red cameras to identify people in rubble even more lives will be saved.

Computers do 'stuff' better than people do. Like it or not, they do. The only exception is emotion and feelings, only you can not dream of what will be achieved in the future. Anyway, computers and, eventually artificial intelligence, will perform calculations quicker, build objects more accurately and never get tired or bored of doing it. some may even say they are 100% reliable. For example, who would you trust more, a robot or a person to measure, say, contamination levels in water?

No?
Now, computers are only as good as the programmer. If the programming is rubbish then the ICT systems will be, if the programming is good, well you can see where I'm going here. My point is, a computer is only as good as it is made to be. A lot of things can go wrong with a computer for several reasons, mainly down to the creator. If it is not tested enough or not programmed in enough depth, then the computer will certainly 'go wrong' as it were. However, robots are not going to take over the world any time soon, I think. ;)

Also, hacking could be a major problem. If some one is cruel enough and clever enough to hack into a robot's system then the consequences will be horrific. Even though humans are more accident prone, robots could malfunction, like any other system and cause sever damage to what they were doing, like making a car or operating on a person...

One question on everyone's minds:
